How to Choose the Right Niche Sites for Your Backlinks
The Sites You Link From Matter More Than the Number of Links

One of the biggest mistakes in link building is treating all backlinks equally. A link from an irrelevant, low-traffic site is not just useless — it can actively dilute your link profile and raise red flags with Google's algorithms. After six years of manual outreach at MMU, we've developed a rigorous vetting framework that we apply to every site. Here's exactly what we look for.

The MMU Site Vetting Checklist
1. Topical Relevance (Non-Negotiable)
Before any metric, ask: is this site genuinely about topics related to my client's niche? A fitness supplement brand doesn't benefit from a link on a travel blog, even if that travel blog has a DR 60. Google uses topical context to assess link relevance.
2. Organic Traffic (Real Visitors Required)
Check the site's estimated organic traffic through Ahrefs or SEMrush. Minimum threshold we recommend: 500–1,000 monthly organic visitors. Sites with artificially inflated DR but zero traffic are link farms in disguise.
3. Domain Rating / Domain Authority
Aim for DR 20+ for standard niche placements, DR 40+ for competitive industries like finance, legal, health, and SaaS, and DR 50+ for high-authority domains when budget allows. Use these numbers as one signal among many — not the only signal.
4. Spam Score
Use Moz's Spam Score to reveal whether a site has a history of low-quality link building itself. A site with a heavily spammed profile will pass diminished value — and linking from it can associate your site with that spam signal.
5. Content Quality Standards
Visit the site. Read several articles. Ask: would a real person find this content valuable? Sites that accept any article regardless of quality are not sites with genuine editorial standards — and Google knows the difference.
6. Indexation Status
Run a site:domain.com search in Google to confirm the site is indexed and how many pages Google has crawled. Very low indexation relative to published content may indicate quality or crawlability issues.
Red Flags to Avoid
- Sites with DR 80+ but fewer than 100 monthly organic visitors
- Sites that prominently advertise dofollow guest posts on their Write for Us page
- Sites with 90%+ foreign-language content targeting English SEO niches
- Sites linking to gambling, pharma, or payday loan clusters across their content
