Domain Rating vs Domain Authority: What Actually Matters for Link Building
Two Metrics, Two Different Companies, One Common Confusion
If you’ve spent any time evaluating backlink opportunities, you’ve run into both Domain Rating (DR, from Ahrefs) and Domain Authority (DA, from Moz). They sound similar, get used interchangeably in outreach pitches, and yet they’re calculated completely differently — which is exactly why relying on either one alone can mislead you.

What These Metrics Actually Measure
Both DR and DA are third-party estimates of a site’s overall link-based authority, built from each company’s own backlink index. Moz describes Domain Authority as a score from 1 to 100 that predicts how well a site is likely to rank. It’s calculated primarily from the quality and quantity of a site’s backlink profile.
Critically, neither metric is a Google ranking factor. Google doesn’t use DR or DA at all — they’re proxies built by third-party tools, useful for comparison, not gospel.
Why a High Score Can Still Mean a Bad Link
A site can have an impressive DR or DA and still be a poor link building target if:
- Its authority comes almost entirely from a handful of manipulated, spammy backlinks
- It has little to no real organic traffic despite the score
- The content on the site has nothing to do with your niche
- The score was recently and suspiciously inflated

What to Actually Check Alongside the Score
A healthier way to evaluate a potential placement:
- Organic traffic trend — is it real and growing, or flat and stagnant?
- Referring domain diversity — links from many different quality domains, not one repeated pattern
- Topical relevance — does the site actually publish in or near your niche?
- Content quality — would a real reader bookmark this site?
Treat the Score as a Filter, Not a Finish Line
DR and DA are useful for quickly filtering out obviously weak sites. But they shouldn’t be the only number you check before committing to a placement. The strongest link building decisions combine the score with a genuine look at the site itself.
